Trade
Nepal’s trade with the EU is increasing over the years. Total value of trade in the fiscal year 2007/08 was to the tune of
150 million euro, of which the value of imports was 88 million euro and that of export 62 million euro. Thus Nepal suffers
a negative balance of payment with the EU. Around 37 percent of Nepal’s overseas exports are bound to the EU countries.
Major export items to the EU countries constitute woollen carpets, ready made garments, handicrafts, tea, hides and skin,
pashmina materials. Major imports constitute machineries, transport equipment, medicinal equipment, chemicals textiles,
polythene materials ,etc.
There is a great scope for the promotion of non-traditional export products such as tea, vegetable seeds, cardamom,
floriculture products, etc. in the EU.
